Q: Our 21-year-old daughter is soon to graduate from college. She’s quite shy and rather geeky and seems out of step with the wild-and-crazy social life of her peers. She’s bright and attractive but prefers to keep to herself, often spending hours in her room on her computer. We’re proud of her and want to support her lifestyle, but we’re also concerned that she’ll never find a partner. Thoughts?

A: Each of us dates to our own drummer, and your daughter may need more time to feel comfortable with herself before looking for companionship. That said, the Internet can be a godsend for the socially self-conscious, and it’s possible that she’s making connections online that could lead to real-life friendships later on. If she has other strong interests—and gives you an opening—you might gently suggest that she look for groups that support those interests, either on campus or in your community, so that she has a chance to meet people while doing something she enjoys.
